What's in a Name: The Thinking Behind the Name Saela
Choosing a name is one of the most difficult parts of building a brand. Anyone who has named a child will attest that deciding upon a name is a struggle! Throw in trademarks and other obstacles and you’ve got yourself a serious challenge.
A name carries meaning long before a product is ever used and experienced. It becomes shorthand for a set of ideas, values, and beliefs and it shapes how a brand is perceived.
When we began building Saela, we knew we weren’t looking for something trend-driven, overtly descriptive or lengthy. We wanted a name that felt timeless and considered.
Derived from the Old Norse word sæla (pronounced Sy-lah), it is often associated with happiness, contentment, wellbeing, and a sense of peace and joy. The more we reflected on the meaning, the more it felt aligned with the philosophy we were building.
Modern skincare exists in a state of constant pursuit of excess. More products, steps, information, fixes, and more noise.
Our belief is that healthy looking skin isn’t the result of complexity, excess and intensity. It’s the result of consistency and supporting the skin rather than constantly challenging it. The same could be said for many areas of life.
For us, Saela represents a different approach. One grounded in long-term thinking and in routines and rituals that support daily life rather than consume too much of it.
The name serves as a reminder of what we’re ultimately trying to create. Not just products, but a different relationship with skincare. One built on simplicity, confidence, and a sense of ease. A name alone doesn’t define a brand but it certainly points towards the ideas that guide it. For us, those ideas have been there from the beginning: thoughtful formulation, considered routines, and a belief that healthy skin should feel achievable rather than overwhelming.
As Saela continues to evolve, the meaning behind the name remains a constant reminder of what matters most. Not chasing more, but creating better. Not complexity for its own sake, but a belief that fewer, better products used consistently can often achieve more.
Your daily skincare routine should support your life, not become another thing demanding your time and attention. And if we’ve done our job well, that’s exactly what Saela will help create: healthy looking skin, an enjoyable daily ritual and a little more space for everything else.
